Ciro Picariello Spumante "Brut Contadino" NV
Today's sparkling is pure, crackling Fiano from the picturesque hills of Avellino, in Campania, from an organic family estate headed up by the eponymous Ciro Picariello.
Surrounded by mountains, Ciro's estate is located in the fittingly-named hamlet of Summonte, where he is known as a master of the Fiano grape. In his capable hands, he crafts a sparkling wine with diamond-etched acidity and tangy mineral freshness.
On the palate, it is full of grapefruit, lemon-lime zest, gunflint, and wet rocks. A super dry, white-pepper finish continues with grapefruit tang, key lime zest, a touch of pear candy and green apple. The acidity and minerality cut through like a laser – this is a sparkler fit for oysters or salt & pepper crab.
This wine is not for the meek. With invigorating crackling energy and a true sense of place, this is as natural as it gets. Gorgeous.
