Domaine Georges Vernay "La Pied du Samson" 2018
For over 20 years Christine Vernay has led this historically important estate in Condrieu, crafting some of the finest 100% organic wine in the Rhône valley.
She is the daughter of the one and only Georges Vernay, who is credited with literally saving Viognier from the brink of extinction in the Rhône and, in fact, the world. Without Christine's family's work, the Condrieu region and its noble Viognier would not be as well known as it is now; its outsized effect on the wine world extends from the Chalone appellation in California to the Eden Valley of Australia and beyond.
This is her Viognier from the region Collines Rhodaniennes, long the sommelier's go-to source for outsized value in the Rhône. Consider it an affordable version of Condrieu, every bit as handmade, hand-harvested, and distinguished.
Viognier grown elsewhere, however, simply isn't the same – its chiseled aromatics of white flowers, wet slate, quivering acidity, peach fruit, and beeswax fill the nose. Its finish is sumptuously rich and perfectly dry – this is the wine to bust out for the pork roast with harissa and tons of crushed herbs.
This rare cuvée is extremely limited – only a handful of connected specialists (ahem, like us!) gain access to this perfumed, gorgeous white wine. As always, we strive to bring you the finest, limited, thought-provoking and historical wines at great value, no matter the price tag. We can easily say this is one of the most outstanding values of the year. Stock up now for the fall months ahead – what we have is all we have!
