Domaine Georges Vernay "Coteau de Vernon" Condrieu 2017 1.5L Magnum
Led by the inimitable Christine Vernay, daughter of the one and only Georges Vernay, who is credited with saving Viognier from the brink of adandonment in the Rhône.
The region is Condrieu, in the windswept northern Rhône, whose vines cling improbably to the hillside, battered by the mistral – the fierce wind that funnels up the river.
The grape is Viognier, but not Viognier as you may know it elsewhere – this is one of the most long-lived white wines in the world, capable of evolving for years. In this magnum format it will age even longer. It will doubtlessly bring you immense joy consumed young and will gracefully age over the next decade-and-a-half.
Lemon jam, crushed white flowers, nectarine skin, wintermint, with vibrant richness, haunting minerality, and texture on the palate. This is a regal, understated, and polished wine with an incredibly long, complex finish. It's simply fantastic.
