Château Valentin Haut-Médoc 2014
Cabernet Sauvignon Blend｜Haut-Médoc, Bordeaux
Make no mistake about it: The Haut-Médoc is still an aficionado's best bet for value and pleasure, for less investment than its Left-Bank Bordelais peers.
This Cru Bourgeois bottling from the estate of Château Valentin in Haut-Médoc impresses year-in and year-out. Found just minutes north of the town of Margaux, the organic terroir is of the highest quality, all farmed by hand with minimal intervention, fermented in a blend of cement tank and French oak. Proprietress Christelle Sorge is the fourth generation in her family to steward the estate since 1928.
Mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with a splash of Merlot and Petit Verdot. Hubert Bouärd of Château Angelus advises on the winemaking, whose wines trade for over $250/bottle.
2014 in Bordeaux is a sommelier's dream – while other high-flying vintages surrounding it tend to attract press and scores, the superb '14 growing year largely flew under the radar. It packs in finesse, early drinking pleasure, yet plenty of stuffing and backbone to reward further cellaring. What more could one ask for in a $24 bottle of Cab?!
Christelle Sorge's Valentin Bordeaux is such an absolute overachiever for the price. Soft, supple, and drinking perfectly now – it doesn't get much better than $24 for such classic Bordeaux!
