Château Macquin, Saint-Georges Saint-Émilion 2018
Merlot-Cabernet Blend｜Bordeaux, France
92 Points Wine Enthusiast
An incredible value on an organic, immensely satisfying Bordeaux that drinks superbly now and will reward cellar-aging for years to come.
Saint-Georges-Saint-Émilion is one of the "satellite" subregions of the larger Saint-Émilion region nearby. There are only 200 hectares in the entire region, making it one of the smallest on this side of the river. The clay, limestone, and alluvial river stones contribute a medley of terroir inflection and singularity, often taking at least a half-decade to come into their own.
Constituting a textbook "right-bank" blend of 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc, and aged 12 months in French oak, this has all the makings of a classic claret. In the glass you'll find a deep, velvety purple, followed by aromas of tobacco, plum, blackcurrant, spice, and black olive. The finish is suave and luscious, with silky, mouth-filling tannins.
We could write paragraphs of praise about this historic estate. Proprietor Denis Corre-Macquin has been at the helm since 1978, and is the third generation to produce wine at this estate since 1885. His grandfather was one of the key farmers responsible for re-grafting blighted vines in the late 19th century, arguably saving thousands of hectares across the region from the devastation of phylloxera across Bordeaux.
