Château La Rabotine, "Cuvée des Dames" Sancerre Rouge 2014
Pinot Noir｜Sancerre, Loire Valley
From Alban Roblin, Sancerre royalty, we bring you a delicious, organic Pinot Noir with a perfect bit of age! Alban Roblin started Château La Rabotine as his own domaine some years back, splintered off from familial vineyards that go back more than five generations, in the postage-stamp-sized hamlet of Surey-en-Vaux (pop. 700), in Sancerre. If you venture to this gorgeous corner of the Loire Valley and ask about the Roblin family, you’ll be pointed to some of the most exceptional sites in the whole appellation. With their higher elevations, perfect exposures, classic soils, and dedication to organic, “hands-off” farming, they’ve perfected the recipe for classic vin de Sancerre.
While mostly recognized for, brisk Sancerre from Sauvignon Blanc, the region also produces wonderful rosé and red from Pinot Noir. Soil dictates what to plant: Sauv Blanc takes to chalky terres blanches, where Pinot Noir loves the limestone-pebbled caillottes soil, which help ripen and deepen the flavors. And you guessed it – Roblin’s plots of clay and limestone caillottes are prolific here, and in 2014 he reserved the absolute best parcels for this limited bottling dubbed “Cuvée des Dames,” a homage to the strong women in his family from past, present, and future.
This 2014 comes direct from their cellar via their U.S. importer. At a perfect eight years of age it’s showing classic notes of blood orange, beetroot, raspberry, and tilled earth with vibrant lift, aromatic intensity, and a minty fresh finish that screams “cool climate Pinot.” Fresh, alive, and absurdly complex for the money, we wager this will continue to go strong for another twelve months. Pair with duck confit, herb-rubbed roasted chicken, braised mushrooms, or grilled salmon and you’ll be in heaven. Just $19 and free shipping on six – while it lasts!
