BonAnno, Cabernet Sauvignon 2019
Cabernet Sauvignon｜Napa Valley
Did you just do a double-take like we did when this came across our tasting table? Well, your eyes do not deceive – a mere $27 for premium Napa Cab is almost unheard of these days.
Aged 16 months in French oak, this 2019 hits all the right notes with cedar, mocha, cassis, and blackberry jam. A modest 8% Merlot backs up the Cab and adds a softer, perfumed note for a smooth, mocha-inflected finish. And connoisseurs will recognize 2019 as a banner vintage critics call extraordinary. All this for $27? Yes, please!
Bon Anno in Italian is a "good year" – it can be a salutation or a toast to long life, along the lines of "cent'anni," made famous in The Sopranos and The Godfather. Matt Bonanno takes the spirit to heart, and his wines have positively overdelivered since the founding of the brand in 2004.
Matt Bonanno got his first break in the biz and inspiration from a chance meeting with the legendary Dick Steltzner, a Napa Valley pioneer who established his eponymous vineyard in the historic Stags Leap District and went on to help establish Diamond Creek, Clos du Val, and others in the glory days of pre-corporate California wine country. Matt Bonanno accompanied up and down Napa together, visiting growers and gaining him access to the legend's network of small growers in the valley, nurtured to this day.
Matt carries on this small, family-run tradition by meticulously sourcing Napa fruit from classic subregions like Calistoga, Yountville, and Rutherford for his BonAnno series.
