Fattoria di Basciano Chianti Riserva 2015
Sangiovese Blend｜Tuscany, Italy
Chianti has seven sub-zones, each with its own idiosyncrasies and defining characteristics. Chianti "Rufina," along with Chianti "Classico," is considered one of the finest, producing wines more on the powerful, fleshier side. Riserva-aged examples, even more so; by law a Riserva must be aged a minimum of two years before release.
The 2015 vintage was a lovely one in Tuscany, albeit warmer. The Italian journalist & critic Antonio Galloni, of Vinous, writes: “The 2015 vintage presents consumers with a tremendous opportunity to acquire fine, cellar worthy wines without spending a fortune." In my opinion, the estates focusing on the native Sangiovese grape are the most successful. (Chianti blends may have Cabernet, Merlot, and other "international" grapes blended in.)
Fattoria Basciano follows this tradition, with their 2015 Riserva comprised of Sangiovese with a dash of the indigenous Colorino variety added. Aged an incredible 30 months in a blend of tank and oak barrel before release, it's robust, complex, and utterly gorgeous, with perfumed notes of black cherry candy, saddle leather, oolong tea, mushroom, and ripe plums on the firm finish.
A standout vintage, awards from all sides – a world-class wine for $25!
