Avennia "Lydian" Cabernet Sauvignon 2017
Columbia Valley, WA
This new project is from Avennia, one of Washington's top wineries and recipient of too many wards to mention; they are know for making highly expressive, concentrated yet balanced examples of Cabernet, Syrah, Merlot, and more.
The "Lydian" project is meant to exemplify a more approachable entry into Avennia's line-up, whose highly-allocated Cabernets easily go for $120+/bottle.
Avennia was founded in 2010, sourcing from the top vineyards in Columbia Valley; since then they've earned some of the highest scores in Washington State and fast become a reference estate for high-end, ageable reds.
Their "Lydian" 2017 has all the marks of class and grace, with juicy and supple dark blue fruits, espresso, black licorice, and fine-grained tannins, especially considering its modest price point. The texture and long finish is classic Washington state: a hint of herbal notes with dark, concentrated red berry fruit and a splash of velvety mocha.
