Angeleno Wine Company "California Crackler" Sparkling Wine 2019

White Blend | Los Angeles County

Angeleno Wine Co. has easily been one of our favorite discoveries of late. A their name implies, Angeleno is based out of Los Angeles and is a champion of the southern California wine scene. They're the first urban L.A. winery to open in over 100 years!

Their "Cali Crackler" is a totally unique sparkling wine made from a blend of Moscato Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. The Moscato hails from the Alonso Family vineyard an hour north of L.A.; the Sauv Blanc and Sémillon from the Swayze Vineyard. Swayze is an absolutely unreal patch of vines sitting at 3000 feet elevation in the middle of the Mojave desert, from the awesomely-named "Antelope Valley of the California High Desert." The high altitude means huge swings in temperature – at night it will drop to near-freezing, even in the middle of summer. The cold temps delay ripening, prolong the growing season, and make for a wildly tropical, highly aromatic profile in the finished wine.

They barrel-ferment the wine and bottle unfined and unfiltered, with no dosage – this is brut nature, slightly opaque, raw and beautiful. We secured this now-sold-out bubbly direct from the winey; they made only 85 cases and this is the only place you'll find it in the world!

In the glass you'll discover a saturated amber color, with slightly opaque, hazy core – the wine is totally unfiltered. This contributes texture and loads of flavor on the palate, with orange flower water, pineapple, baked apple, elderflower, and fennel. And wow, does that fennel carry through! Ripe Asian pear, licorice, and flowers lead to the bone-dry, textured finish. This is a rich and chewy sparkler, and you'll find it only here!

Everything about this wine is unique: from the one-of-a-kind vineyard sites to its flavor and texture. Grapes have grown here longer than Sonoma, Napa, or any other nor-Cal regions. Los Angeles County was the FIRST region to be planted by Spanish missionaries in 1833; by the end of the 19th century the county was the largest wine region in California. Don't sleep on this awesome bubbly, it's totally unique, rare, and delicious!
