Ridgecrest Vineyards Grüner Veltliner 2019
Willamette Valley, Oregon
Ridgecrest's story begins forty-one years ago, when Harry Peterson-Nedry purchased a plot of land in Ribbon Ridge, which was then the furthest anyone had dared to venture in the cold, foggy western edge of the Willamette Valley. It took another twenty-five years before this area was officially recognized as the Ribbon Ridge AVA, a subregion of Willamette Valley and the smallest in the state. Incredible foresight!
This lip-smacking, fine-edged Grüner was crafted by Wynne Peterson-Nedry, Harry's daughter, who is now the head winemaker. Numerous accolades precede her: From working in some of the best vineyards in both hemispheres to attaining her Master's in Oenology from U.C. Davis, the talent shows across all the wines she makes, following in her father's footsteps. The wines have never been better.
New to Grüner Veltliner? It's Austria's signature variety, and makes nervy, high-tension white wine with brilliant acid and an almost incongruently rich, luxurious mouthfeel. Here the wine has snappy green apple skin, sea spray, acacia flowers, and a fistful of green herbs. The textbook acidity is all there, energetic and alive, quivering with grapefruit pith, white pepper, and a citrus-lined stony, viscous mouthfeel. No wonder it was awarded 93 points by Vinepair!
Don't forget – wine is a food, and food is politics. What and how a person consumes reverberates throughout the food chain and across societies. That cheap $5 grocery store bottle of wine? To get that cheap, vineyard workers were likely underpaid or taken advantage of, and the vines were probably sprayed with an array of nasty chemicals to avoid the costly manual work it takes to replace man-made deadly chemicals.
This is all to say that at Prologue Wine Co. we only champion wines made in a wholesome way that are good for the planet and our society. Ridgecrest is certified organic, salmon-safe, and L.I.V.E. Certified (Low Input Viticulture & Enology). Their professional vineyard-management team specializes in such practices and their workers are paid living wages.
This fine-edged Grüner is honestly made, small production, and simply lip-smackingly delicious. A convenient screw cap makes it easy to take anywhere, from your next outing to the park, the pool, or camping!
