Château Redortier Beaumes-de-Venise" 2015
Grenache-Syrah Blend｜Rhône Valley, France
Beaumes-de-Venise is one of the famed "crus" of the southern Rhône, in the same league yet a fraction of the price as nearby Gigondas, Vacqueyras, and Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Located on an ancient medieval site used since the middle ages, Château Redortier has been the vanguard of this appellation since their first vintage in 1956, and one of the finest old-school producers of organic Rhône reds you'll find.
Co-proprietors Suzelle and Isabelle de Menthon are both hands-on and hands-off in everything. Fruit is lovingly tended in the vineyard; every bunch is hand-harvested to select only the best. In the winery the juice ferments on its own, with no chemical additions or manipulations, in giant concrete fermenters where it's fermented from its native yeast, then "rested" in large, old foudres (1000-liter oak vats), bottled unfined and unfiltered.
The result is a wine pure and rich, heady yet balanced, filled with the classic "garrigue" note, that word adored by wine geeks describing the wild flora of rosemary, lavender, olive trees and juniper prevalent here. Dusty cassis fruit is complemented by warm earthy and herbal scents evocative of a hike through the French countryside.
The blend is some 60% Grenache with a strong assist of 35% Syrah and a splash of the rare Counoise varietal, all from their estate vineyards perched at some 1600-foot elevations among the Dentelles de Montmirail mountains.
This is a bold and earthy southern French red, the best in its class, with a wonderful half-decade bottle age to boot. Free shipping on six, this is a wine to load up on to take you through the remaining chilly winter months!
