Château Respide-Médeville, Graves Blanc 2015
Sauvignon Blanc Blend｜Bordeaux, France
Graves, (pronounced “GRAHV,” known for its gravelly soils, hence the name), is a prestigious region in Bordeaux, on its left Bank. In nearby Péssac-Leognan, north of Graves, you’ll find one of the five “first growths” — Château Haut-Brion — and other notable estates crafting long lived examples of Cabernet-forward claret.
What you may not know, however, is that Graves is also the archetype for some of the world's most famous Sauvignon Blanc blends, AKA Bordeaux Blanc. This wonderful example comes from the prestigious house run by Julie Médeville, of Gonet-Médeville Champagne fame, where she crafts some lovely Champagnes. Her skill is on display with this bottling from Bordeaux, a classic blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Muscadelle which perfectly straddles the line between brisk and refreshing and something a little deeper and richer. Throw in the fact that it comes in from the vaunted classic vintage of 2015 and you’ve got the makings of a wonderful Sauvignon Blanc that has so many different notes and pairs beautifully at the dinner table with a wide array of foods.
Discover candied pear drops, Meyer lemon peel, fresh flowers, and a hint of those large polished river stones that make up the gravelly soils of Graves. Still showing plenty of freshness, life and character, this is a classic “poolside” white but also has something for those desiring a bit more richness in the glass.
