Chalmers, Nero d'Avola 2019

Nero d'Avola|Heathcote, Australia

Nero d’Avola, Sicily’s most widely planted grape, finds an ideal home in Heathcote, Australia, brought to us by the forward-thinking, exciting Chalmers winery. Known for their environmentally-minded, pioneering work in importing and propagating Italian varietals, they keenly and carefully match site to grape, farming sustainably and crafting wine with minimal input and zero adulteration.

Bruce and Jenni Chalmers were not satisfied with the “status quo” of simply crafting mainstream Shiraz. For over thirty years they’ve been focused on mostly Italian varieties, cannily importing over seventy different vine types for both their winery and a thriving nursery business, which has been instrumental in propagating these vines across estates and regions. Today the day-to-day is run by daughters Kim and Tenille Chalmers, who continue to champion drought-tolerant, hardy grapes like this Nero d’Avola as the future for a sustainable Australian wine industry.

Where Nero d’Avola is capable of producing both Burgundian, ethereal reds as well as deeper, spicier expressions from Mount Etna, Sicily, Chalmers’ Nero embodies those lithe qualities with a bit of Aussie sun and velvety fruit thrown in. In the glass, discover a glimmering ruby, with aromas of ripe red plum, black cherry, pencil lead, and a wonderful bouquet of red flowers. That buoyant, floral nature continues in the mouth with mulberry, cherry candy, pepper, and dusty earth. The conventional wisdom that all Aussie reds are big, bold bruisers is flipped with this fragrant, plush, Pinot-like red.

Heathcote is in Victoria, part of Australia’s idyllic south-eastern coastline and just a short hour’s drive from Melbourne, the state capital. The Mount Camel ranges frame the region, providing elevation and moderating the sunny, warm climate, where this dry-farmed Nero d’Avola thrives.

We’re very excited to have discovered Chalmers; the entire range is exciting, balanced, and a bold vision for the future of Aussie wine. Expect more from them and, in the meantime, enjoy diving into this beautiful, fragrant, fun red!
