Château Caillou, "Crème de Tête" Sauternes 1959
Sémillon Blend｜Sauternes, Bordeaux
This rare gem comes direct from the estate's cellar of nearly-lost vintages. That's correct: you will be only the second owner of this investment-grade Sauternes.
The noble house of Château Caillou is one of the original estates identified in the Grand Cru classification of 1855, designated a "Second Growth" (Deuxième Cru) for its majestic Sauternes, the indisputable king of Bordeaux dessert wine. To this day the Château is still family run in the capable hands of Sébastien Pierre, the fourth generation to run the estate.
In keeping with tradition, the blend is some 90% Sémillon balanced by Sauvignon Blanc. Harvested by hand late in the season, the terrifically ripe grapes were fermented in barrel using natural fermentations (they had no other way of doing it fifty years ago).
The bottles are in pristine condition, shipped and stored in 100% climate-controlled conditions. The fill level is "Mid Neck" – the optimum level.
Tasted recently the wine is still ripe, luscious, and easy drinking. This is the perfect birth-year gift or an addition to the cellar that is relatively easy on the wallet – keep in mind that vintage Sauternes can run to the thousands of dollars a bottle. Just in time for the holidays, revel in this amazing gem.
