Bohème "English Hill Vineyard" Pinot Noir 2016

Sonoma Coast

We are very choosy with our Pinot Noir offerings here – we taste literally hundreds of domestic Pinot Noirs in our never-ending quest to bring you the very best, and it takes a lot to win us over. This single vineyard Pinot from Bohème did just that. Balanced, well developed, and wonderfully complex, this one hits all the marks.

On the western edge of Russian River Valley, the English Hill vineyard is a mere 8.5 acres overlooking Tomales Bay and the Marin Headlands – if you've ever been to Marin in the summer, you know well how windswept and downright frigid it gets. This, along with the famed "Goldridge" soils, make for perfect terroir and an ideal ripening season, slowly coaxing out well-developed flavors and avoiding over-extraction.

The mix of Pinot Noir clones planted include Wente, Calera, and Vosne-Romanée – a veritable "who's who" – aged gracefully and judiciously in 15% new French oak. A light hand all the way, reflected in the 13.5% abv, a stunning feat for Russian River Pinot. The soft touch is balanced by gorgeous, full-flavored red berry fruit and exotic spice. It's almost Burgundian with its aromas of juicy Morello cherry, saddle leather, forest floor, sweet cinnamon-flecked spice, and a long and savory, mouth-watering finish. This drinks deliciously after an hour's decanting and will age beautifully for another half-decade no doubt.
