Bernhard Ott, "Der Ott" Grüner Veltliner 2017

Grüner Veltliner|Wagram, Austria

Ah, Grüner, how we love thee! Grüner Veltliner is a Sommelier’s favorite for a reason. Its duality of vibrant minerality and rich texture make it ideal for everyday drinking and for expansive food pairing potential.

Located in Feuersbrunn, the beating heart of Wagram’s wine country, Bernhard Ott is one of the foremost practitioners of Austria’s signature varietal. His family has been in this village since 1889, with Bernhard at the reins since 1992. In 2004 he bravely began the transformation to full biodynamic farming, not an easy feat in the upper latitudes of Europe! His hard work has paid dividends ever since and the wines have arguably never been better.

Among a coterie of talented producers in Wagram, Weingut Ott stands out for his dedication to minimalist farming: total abdication of chemicals, no artificial additions, and fastidious farming timed to the lunar calendar. This is not only a lifted, beautiful white wine but a testament to the belief that natural winemaking yields indisputable results.

His numerous bottlings consistently earn top accolades. This blend, crowned “Der Ott,” comes from several of his top estate vineyards, representing an “entry-level” bottling that is anything but ordinary. Grüner’s magical, shape-shifting allure is on full display here, with effusive notes of green melon, crème fraîche, white pepper, fleshy pear, and a palate full of that so-desired savory, mineral-tinged acidity, with a plush mouthfeel reminiscent of sliced peaches and wintergreen herbs as fresh and clean as an alpine stream!

His upper-echelon single-vineyard bottlings are equally impressive – and higher in price! We think this gorgeous, glittering cuvée represents the best intersection of value and quality, but don’t be surprised to see those more expensive editions in future offers! At $30/bottle, you won’t find it anywhere near our offering, so don't delay – indulge in one of Austria’s masters of the grape at the best price in the nation!
