Kamara Winery "Nimbus Russus" 2015
Xinomavro-Merlot-Syrah Blend｜Macedonia, Greece
“Nature is the real winemaker, we are her assistant.”
That’s the creed at Kamara Pure, a small family affair in Macedonia, near Thessaloniki in Greece. The scion of the family, Dimitrios Kioutsoukis, is a UC-Davis trained engineer who, along with his expansive family, decided to leave the “big city” of Thessaloniki to the countryside, where they farm vines of native Greek varieties (like the wonderful Xinomavro grape) alongside “international” grapes, such as Merlot, Cabernet, and Syrah.
In keeping with their motto “beyond organics,” they farm and make wine with virtually no human intervention. Using sporadic treatments of herbal teas, occasional hoeing, hand harvesting, and natural fermentations their wines are real, honest expressions of the land.
This fantastic red is a blend of the native Xinomavro (40%) with equal parts Syrah and Merlot, in a kind of “super Greek” blend that marries the best aspects of all three. The wine is a burst of dark fruit, cherries, and old-world earthy goodness. Black cherries, green tobacco, pepper, licorice, and figs meld into a palate with a bit of grippy, delightfully chewy tannins, and a velvety, spicy, chocolate-laced finish. Lamb kefta...pork ribs...Moroccan chicken with preserved lemon...heady spices and robust meats are a perfect match for this wine.
Reds like this always need a bit of "time in bottle" to reach their peak, and this 2015 is simply firing on all cylinders now and will continue to do so over the next 2-3 years. Love it!
