4kilos Vinícola "Motor América" 2019
Red Blend｜Mallorca, Spain
Art as wine…
From Francesc Grimalt and Sergio Caballero, 4kilos is a boutique, uber-natural label based on the idyllic island of Mallorca, part of the Balearic islands off the coast of Spain.
In Spanish slang, a kilo is slang for a million pesos; to launch the project they chipped in two “kilos” each, hence the name. They are artists as much as they are winemakers, in the literal sense – from creating visual installations and off-kilter music videos or documenting tea tasting tours in Japan, their passion for art weaves throughout everything they do.
He and Sergio Caballero purchased a practically-abandoned sheep farm in Mallorca, and converted it to a scrappy winery in a converted stable/garage, calling on friends and family to help harvest every year. The French term “garagiste” – literally, a garage-winemaker – is incredibly apt here; their first vintage was vinified in a milk refrigeration unit!
Their “Motor América” red blend is mostly comprised of the indigenous Callet grape, one which Francesc is partially responsible for helping to preserve. It’s hardly ever seen, almost never outside of its native Mallorca. Rounding out the blend is some old-vine Monastrell (a.k.a. Mourvèdre), and Manto Negro, another grape native to the Balearic and Canary Island chains.
In the glass, find a medium-ruby color and spicy, wild aromas evocative of the island countryside. Rhubarb and cherry, bay and rosemary. Spicy and light-footed with a hint of dusty earth and licorice.
A wine you can drink at any hour of the day with myriad food pairing potential, from apéritif hour, pizza night, grilled pork chops, or olive-oil roasted tomatoes with grilled halloumi cheese...yum! Unfined and unfiltered, a raw and lovely look into the natural wine scene of the Balearic islands!
