Tenuta Rocca "Vigna San Pietro" Barolo 2004
From the powerful, limestone-rich soils of Monforte d'Alba, in Barolo, comes a pristine library release 2004 Barolo to impress and delight.
Of the five main “crus” of Barolo, Monforte d’Alba is considered the longest-lived, muscular subregion for Barolo. Indeed, its etymological roots of “strong” (forte) translate to its wines. Situated along the Serralunga Valley, the most notable characteristic is the prevalence of limestone soils, a vestige of the prehistoric tropical sea that once covered these awe-inspiring hills.
Tenuta Rocca makes wine from only land they farm, the sum of which totals a mere 12 hectares. This allows the highest attention to detail and care throughout their farming and cellar practices. The single-vineyard (vigna) “San Pietro” is a tiny plot; a mere few-hundred bottles make it to the U.S. every year. And you guessed it – we’re one of the lucky few to get our hands on some!
Enjoying an aged Nebbiolo can be a sublime drinking experience. This 2004 has softened and developed deep complexity with age. Concentrated sweet cherry fruits, dried thyme, warm soil, rosehip tea, and ground black pepper envelop the nose. People often ask me whether to decant or not; this is one of those wines I recommend opening to witness its aromas and flavors unfold from the first pull to a good four hours or more of decanting.
The 2004 vintage is a downright classic – if you can still find any on the market! The vintage was relatively temperate, especially as compared to the fiercely hot 2003 preceding it. In winemaker Piero Ballario’s talented hands, this single-vineyard “San Pietro” was aged for two years in barrel and another four in bottle before its release in 2011. While this probably lands in the “modern” camp of Barolo, it still exudes classic Nebbiolo notes and extremely well-integrated oak and, of course, an unmistakable sense of Monforte terroir.
