Laurent Bénard "La Clé des Sept Arpents" Extra Brut Champagne 2014

Pinot Meunier Blend|Champagne

Introducing Laurent Bénard, a tiny Champagne house in the prestigious Premier Cru village of Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, one of the most distinguished villages in Champagne, home to some of the finest names: Billecart-Salmon, Philipponnat, and Bollinger are all nearby.

In fact, when this wine hit the tasting table, one of our first comments was its eerie similarities to Bollinger. Its richness, pure minerality, and polished fruit precision echo the style and quality of Bollinger.

This is a grower Champagne – wife-and-husband proprietors Michelle and Laurent Bénard-Pitois produce wine from their own vineyards. Fully certified Ecocert organic, they began the process some 25 years ago, long before it was fashionable or notable.

This 66% Pinot Meunier, 17% Pinot Noir, 17% Chardonnay blend is hand-harvested and carefully fermented in a blend of stainless steel and oak barrels, producing a deep, rich expression. Brioche, lemon custard, Asian pear, toasted cashew, white flowers, and chalky limestone abound. This Champagne is Extra-Brut, finishing bone-dry, clean, and fresh.

Make no mistake: this wine is as distinguished, classic, delicious, and long-lived as any of the bigger players out there. Drink now or happily cellar for another 5-10 years for glorious results.

It's a wonder to find such an under-the-radar,  producer and we couldn't be happier to share it with you. We have just a few bottles to share – enjoy!
