Vincent Girardin "Les Pitures" Volnay Premier Cru 2017
Pinot Noir｜Burgundy, France
Whereas other French regions in 2017 suffered from frost, hail, and painfully small yields, 2017 in Burgundy saw a dry, sunny August and a plentiful harvest. Pinot Noir is shaping up to be delightful in '17, and we're pleased to offer this natural, gorgeous red Burgundy from Maison Vincent Girardin.
The Girardins go back to the 1600s in Burgundy. At the young age of 19 Vincent inherited vines from his family's various holdings and quickly made a name as a top winemaker. In 2008 he committed to biodynamic methods in the vineyard and winery: working exclusively with vineyard sites that use zero chemicals whatsoever, and in the winery the Maison makes wine according to the lunar calendar and with no artificial yeasts. The wines are about as "natural" as it gets, yet remain pure expressions of classic Burgundy throughout.
This Premier Cru plot in Volnay, called "Les Pitures," reminds me of of old-school Burgundy before the wines became so over-polished and flashy – the nose has a bit of earthy-mushroom funk, tilled soil, and delicate red fruits. The deep bedrock of limestone in Les Pitures confers a firm backbone of acidity, layered with gorgeous cranberry, pomegranate, and French lavender perfume. The finish is bright and textured, with violets, cherry candy, rose hips, and a hint of that mushroom-earth funk and old leather.
The best Volnay is delicate, generously-fruited, and capable of both early drinking and gracefully aging. Enjoy this perfumed Pinot Noir now or lay it down for a further 5-7 years to watch it evolve. Free shipping on only two bottles!
