Mayacamas Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Mt. Veeder, Napa Valley

We're proud to offer one of the most storied and celebrated American wines in history. For an astounding 132 years they've continuously produced wine from the rugged, unparalleled terroir of their Mt. Veeder estate almost 2400 feet above the valley floor – among the highest-elevation vineyards in Napa. The respected wine writer John Gilman calls Mayacamas "one of the greatest Cabernet Sauvignon producers in the history of California."

From their founding in 1889, Mayacamas has persisted through depressions, two world wars, Prohibition, and the devastating wildfires of 2017. From their entry in the two historic Judgement of Paris tastings to today's top accolades, the estate produces some of the most distinguished wines in all of California and arguably the world.

The estate is organically farmed, with biodynamic influences, under the watchful eye of the esteemed Andy Erickson, superstar winemaker whose résumé includes Harlan and Screaming Eagle, among others. Vines are dry farmed and the wine is raised in a mix of concrete tank and very large, very old barrels, some of which have been in use since the 1920s.

2014 might be one of my favorite Napa vintages of this century. It's a divergence from the typical over-extracted, high-octane styles of recent years; the best have echoes of the old world, with grace and poise. This stunning example has fragrant wild blackberry, spent cigar, mocha, mint, and iron grit, all wrapped in a velvet, suave mouthfeel and a remarkably low 13.75% abv.

As any fan of Napa wines will attest, Cabernet Sauvignon (especially those made by Erickson) can easily fetch stratospheric four-figure prices, making this wine's entry all the more attractive. It's not inexpensive by any means, but when placed within the context of its peers the value comes into focus. Totally natural winemaking, heirloom mountain fruit, and a bevy of scores from 95-97 points from the top critics – for less than $120/bottle!

The wine drinks gorgeously after an hour's decanting and will continue to gracefully develop for another two decades easily.
