Dr. Wagner "Rausch" Grosses Gewächs Riesling 2015
Yes, German wine labels are a mouthful, yet they contain a trove of information once you know the basics. For instance, "Grosses Gewächs" (G.G. for short) on the label is a sign of tremendous quality, one which means that the grapes must be of perfect ripeness, hand-harvested, come from a great vineyard site, and be fermented fully dry (no sugar left whatsoever).
This is a limited, library release of Christiane Wagner's single-vineyard Rausch G.G. Riesling. This vineyard is found along the vertiginous banks of the Saar river, a tributary of the Mosel. Christiane Wagner is the fifth generation to head up the estate; in this bottling you'll find lemon-scented wet rocks, fennel seed, and cherry pit married to a powerful and distinct minerality.
This is an exclusive library release of perfectly-aged Saar Riesling, direct from the estate to you. As Vinous Media put it when they awarded the wine 90 points, "If Christiane Wagner wanted to make a big, distinct statement with her estate’s first-ever Grosses Gewächs, she certainly succeeded."
