Tiziano Grasso "La Briccolina" Barolo DOCG 2015
Barolo remains one of the best values for the money there is today. The same quality, hundreds-of-years history, refinement, and aging prowess in Burgundy or elsewhere will cost you three times the price (or more) than a great bottle of Nebbiolo.
The Grasso family's Barolo is no exception. From the Serralunga subregion of Barolo, they farm Nebbiolo from one magical hillside vineyard, called La Briccolina.
For most of the history of the estate the family sold fruit from this site to surrounding wineries. In 2012 Tiziano Grasso decided to bottle their produce for the first time. Tragically, Tiziano passed away shortly just after realizing his vision; his son Daniele continues the fifth-generation family tradition to the tune of a mere 3,000 bottles each year, solely from this one vineyard. That's 250 cases – for the entire world.
The Nebbiolo is aged in large Slovenian botti – tall ovular wooden casks, where the wine gracefully develops its sleek curves, polished fruit, and delicate rose-petal aromatics. From soil to bottle, this is a pure reflection of terroir.
None other than Antonio Galloni of Vinous Media had this to say in his 93-point review of the 2015:
"The 2015 Barolo Briccolina is sensual, beautifully perfumed and very pretty. A decidedly elegant, gracious Barolo for Serralunga, the 2015 is a wine that engages all the sense with its exquisite beauty. Readers should expect a mid-weight, understated Barolo that is more about nuance than sheer power."
Organic, authentic Barolo that drinks beautifully now and will age for two decades. As simple as that.
