San Carlo Brunello di Montalcino 2015
Allow me to introduce this wine by way of another. Gianfranco Soldera's "Case Basse" Sangiovese, considered one of the finest wines not only in Montalcino but the entire world, is the stuff of legend. Their 2015 retails for $500 (or more) and is as vigorously traded on secondary markets as a 1952 Mickey Mantle trading card.
Which brings us to the estate of San Carlo. Located a stone's throw away from Soldera, San Carlo has the same million-dollar terroir. They're found just southwest of the magical, medieval fortress-town of Montalcino itself. If you need further testament, the immense quality of the land here inspired Gaja, whose Piedmontese Barbarescos are the stuff of legend, to purchase a vineyard next door in 1994.
This backstory renders the value of San Carlo's 2015 Brunello in stark relief – the fact they're a stone's throw apart is no coincidence. And at $55 you can experience it for about 1/10th the price of a Soldera.
I'll let Ian D'Agata of Vinous describe the San Carlo 2015:
"Brooding aromas of red cherry, black cherry pit, mocha and licorice. Chewy and firmly tannic, offering rich bitter cherry and cocoa flavors plus a sexy note of sweet tobacco. The tannins gain strength on the finish, which is quite saline and lingers nicely."
A collector's dream from one of the most lauded vintages on record. Free shipping on just four bottles. Get it while you can!
