Relic Wine Cellars "Paras Vineyard" Grenache 2014

Mt. Veeder, Napa Valley, California

Grenache from the high-elevation, highly-desired terroir of Mount Veeder! One mostly finds Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varieties grown here, so we were overjoyed to experience this rare and sumptuous Grenache from the Paras Vineyard high up on the mountain, in a Châteaneuf-du-Pâpe-meets-Napa superstar cuvée.

On the western edge of the Mayacamas range, Mount Veeder lays claim to some of the highest-elevation vineyards in all of Napa. These high altitudes and intense sun exposure both delay and intensify ripening, making for rugged, ethereal, and balanced wines.

Relic's Grenache comes from the acclaimed Paras Vineyard, owned by the eponymous Jim Paras, who long ago recognized the potential for Rhône varieties like Grenache in this site.

Need more proof? Relic's fans are many:

Wine Spectator writes in their 93-point review:

"Combines polish with density, offering a structured backbone and deeply layered black raspberry, smoky meat and peppery mineral notes that persist. Refined tannins. Drink now through 2024."

Antonio Galloni calls it:

"A voluptuous Grenache that is an absolute joy to taste today."

Relic Winery was founded by wife-and-husband team Schatzi Throckmorton & Michael Hirby. Schatzi has plenty of mountain experience – her career included managing the esteemed Behrens Family winery nearby, a cult producer of mountain blends. There were (and are) few women working as general managers of major wineries, and Schatzi has helped blaze a trail for women in the wine industry.

She and Hirby founded Relic in 2001; in wine terms a lifetime ago. The economy was only just starting to recover from the Dot-Com bust in the Bay Area; since then they've maintained a serious set of networks, not least of which is Jim Paras and this phenomenal Grenache from his vineyard.
