Leo Steen Rosé of Grenache 2020
Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma, California
Since 2004, winemaker Leo Hansen of Leo Steen Wines has championed distinctive vineyard sites and lesser-known grapes in California – his Chenin Blancs from prestigious vineyards are among the finest in California. And this rosé of Grenache, fresh off the press, is yet another stellar entry in his amazing line-up!
This beautiful rosé has some heavyweight provenance – it hails from none other than the Provisor Vineyard, in the Lytton Springs district of Dry Creek Valley – the same Lytton Springs made by famous by Ridge. It shines with vibrant, juicy candied raspberry fruit and phenolic texture (that certain Grenache-y richness on the palate which comes from the extracted grape skins). The aromas go on and on with sour black cherry and an abundance of flowers: jasmine, gardenia, and plum blossoms that lead into a dry finish and high-toned, razor-like acidity that leaves your mouth watering and salivating to come back for more.
Lytton Springs, in the Dry Creek Valley appellation of Sonoma, traces its lineage to Captain William H. Litton (the "I" was changed to a "Y" some decades later, seemingly by mistake); in 1860 he acquired a large portion of land in modern-day Sonoma, including what would become Lytton Springs and the Provisor Vineyard found within it.
Provisor's owners are Susan and Doug Provisor, who farm the red, iron-rich rocky soils organically and dole out their highly-coveted fruit to a handful of indie wineries each year. As you may know, 2020 was a tough year for California; the devastating wildfires meant destroyed vineyards and property at worst, and smoke tainted wines at best if you harvested after the conflagration. Leo was prescient in picking before the fires started, meaning this low-abv, highly-flavored gem emerged unscathed. Jump in to an organic rosé that'll make you say "oooh" from the first sip. And for every bottle sold we'll donate to the California Fire Foundation, our favorite non-profit for honoring and supporting firefighters, their families, and the victims of wildfires.
