R. Renaudin, "L'Espiègle" Premier Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut Champagne 2008
Widely considered one of the best vintages of the century thus far, 2008 Champagnes are for the investment-minded – the best are eminently cellar-worthy, endlessly complex, and will provide joy for years to come. Jancis Robinson defines it as having “classically styled wines with fresh acidity, balanced by sound ripeness achieved late in the season.”
Which brings us to this rare, delicious bottling of Renaudin’s “tête du cuvée” “L’Espiègle” from their estate vineyards in the famed Côte des Blancs region known for its sublime chalky soils and old vines of Chardonnay.
This cuvée is a blanc de blancs, comprised of 100% Chardonnay from the premier cru-rated village of Pierry. Hand harvested fruit is gently pressed into a blend of three-to-seven year-old oak barrels, where it’s fermented, naturally and slowly, in their old chalk caves that date back to the original founding of the estate in 1724 (!!!).
In the vein of all top tier Chardonnay-driven Champagnes from 2008, it shows a pure line of lemon-inflected mineral power throughout, complemented by hints of tropical notes (yellow peach and mango come to mind) and deeply entwined roasted almonds and brioche notes. Aged on its lees for an astounding eleven years and finished with a low dosage, it's dry and elegant, balanced by intense mineral brightness, ripe fruit, powerful bass notes and poised richness. Supreme!
It’s rare to find this confluence of elegance, precision, and power at such absurdly low pricing for premium vintage Champagne. Other estates’ top entries from the same 2008 vintage will easily set you back three figures (and higher!).
They have thus far produced this edition in only three vintages: 2000, 2006, and 2008. And you guessed it – we acquired as many as we could for you, our dear fans, but once they’re gone that’s it – move quickly to secure yours at our mind-bending low price of $65/bottle and free shipping on just three!
