Quinta do Regueiro Espumante Bruto 2018
Deliciously dry sparkling wine from Vinho Verde, Portugal!
Hailing from the Vinho Verde subregions of Monção and Melgaço, arguably the finest, Quinta do Regueiro is one of the old school vanguards of the Alvarinho grape, planted along the banks of the famed Minho river. Influenced by a procession of successive cultures, this medieval region has countless influences including Celtic, Gaul, Moorish, and more.
Found in northern Portugal on the Spanish border, Vinho Verde translates to "green wine," referencing not the color but rather that their wines are best enjoyed young and the lush, verdant landscape. In fact, Galicia just across the border, is known as "green Spain."
This sparkling wine is made from Alvarinho – aka Albarińo in Spain – in the metodo classico, the very same as Champagne, and is full of crushed rocks and citrus zest. It is definitively dry (bruto) and evokes the windy, rocky provenance of its vineyards. Zippy and fresh, with notes of key lime pie, white pepper, and electric acidity it's a perfect match for the coastal and river influenced cuisine of the region: anchovies, octopus, and richer fare such as bacalhau – Portuguese roasted salt cod whipped with potatoes and garlic.
If you gravitate towards minerally, dry and characterful Iberian whites or super-delicious brut-style sparkling wine then you'll love these unique, flavorful bubbles from northern Portugal!
