Domaine Dubreuil-Fontaine Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru 2015

Chardonnay|Burgundy

An investment-grade, collectible gem from the wonderful Domaine Dubreuil-Fontaine. The estate is led by Christine Gruère-Dubreuil, the fifth generation in her family to direct the domaine, along with her daughter Clémentine, who is set to be the sixth generation in her family to lead it into the future. I fondly recollect sharing a meal with Christine Dubreuil and her family at a winemaking dinner some thirteen years ago – her daughter Clémentine was barely old enough to see over the table!

This is nothing less than a blue chip white Burgundy, fit for enjoyment after significant decantation or to be laid down and aged for a further fifteen years. It's said that, in the 8th century, the emperor Charlemagne issued a command to replant this legendary hill to white grapes; the red wines of Corton stained his long, white beard to the displeasure of his wife. Regardless of the story's truth, Chardonnay has made its home here for centuries, revered by monks and long recorded as some of the most majestic in the world.

Corton-Charlemagne can easily reach stratospheric prices, making this gem a relative bargain when compared to its brethren – any other grower as distinguished would fetch twice as much, if not more. Acacia flowers, ginger tea, lemon balm, lanolin, orange peel, and Meyer lemon blossom all pour from the glass, in slow-evolving, deliberate fashion. This is a gloriously epic white wine that takes hours to fully develop in glass, or years to evolve in bottle.

The family's vineyard holdings are exclusively located in the Côte de Beaune, centered around historic, multi-million terroir. Their 20 hectares are all sustainably farmed, hand harvested, and fermented all naturally. All family-run, family-owned and minuscule quantities.
