Antonopoulos "Nea Dris" Cabernet 2015
Cabernet Blend｜Achaia, Greece
Simply put, this might very well be the most value-packed glorious Cabernet – from anywhere – we’ve offered this year. This amazing Greek red is an absolute MUST and a no-brainer case buy. Poured blind for me recently I was dead-set it was a cru classé left-bank Bordeaux, like a Pauillac from a major chateau.
You’ll agree from the first sniff to the last sip. At 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Cabernet Franc, its makeup, aroma, complexity, and opulence echo Bordeaux in so many ways. Wildly perfumed, with blackcurrant, dried thyme, cedar, violet perfume, dusty earth, and tobacco, there’s simply no mistaking this for anything other than a masterful Cabernet blend. At six years old it just now seems to be coming into its own – the tannins are pure and assertive, with a gravelly, graphite texture and snappy black fruit. Tasted over a period of several hours it just got better and better.
The winery was founded by the eponymous Konstantinos Antonopoulos in the mid ‘70s in Achaia, a region on the Peloponnese peninsula of Greece. The vineyards here are mountainous and rugged, extending as high as 2700 feet elevations, which no doubt imprint the wines with that rugged mountain terroir. Sadly, Konstantinos passed away in 1994 but the estate and his name live on under the aegis of Yannis Halikias and the Antonopoulos family.
Now more than ever, Greece has positioned itself as a world-class wine producing country. An overwhelming majority of production consists of small, family-run estates with high principles and the utmost devotion to quality. Antonopoulos knocked it out of the park on this one!
At $25, this drinks like a mountain Napa Cab or pedigreed Bordeaux at twice the price or more. Trust us when we say go long – order up 12 bottles or more to savor now and over the next decade. The juice in the bottle is destined for a long life. We’re the only place in the country to have it, but when it’s gone it’s gone forever!
